A summer in Hamburg 17
Reading Time: 2 minutes

With its maritime charm, beautiful parks and stunning architecture, Hamburg is simply a wonderful place to enjoy the warm days. We’ve put together our top picks for summer activities you can do in Hamburg:

  • HafenCity is a Hamburg hotspot in summer. Here you can stroll along the Elbe, admire the modern architectural masterpieces and relax in the many restaurants and cafés on the waterfront. A visit to the Elbphilharmonie, one of the city’s most striking buildings, is an absolute highlight.
  • Planten un Blomen Park, also centrally located in Hamburg’s city centre, is a wonderful place to spend an afternoon. Here you can stroll through colourful flowerbeds, visit the Japanese Garden or enjoy one of the fascinating water shows in the music pavilion.
  • Our absolute top tip this summer: a magical evening at the “Klangwolke zum Vollmond” in the Stadtpark. Alexander Raychev and Cord Brandis play delicate piano sounds, new classics and electronic spherical sounds from the balcony of the planetarium while the full moon shines from above. Admission is free, don’t forget blankets and a picnic basket! Dates: 4 June, 2 July, 1 August and 31 August 2023 from 9pm to 10pm each night.

And what if Hamburg’s sluggish weather does prevail again? No problem, there are also plenty of great “indoor” activities, such as watching films at the Passage Kino, a visit to Bar 1910, the Markthalle and Restaurant Hobenköök. This is our current top choice for you:

  • Hamburg has a rich selection of museums and galleries. These three exhibitions are running in the coming months:
    • 50 Years of Sesame Street: immerse yourself in the world of the popular characters at the Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe (MK&G) and discover the production process of the iconic show through an extensive collection of original puppets and costumes. (07.05.23-07.01.24)
    • ELBWÄRTS: Beautiful paintings by Tobias Duwe, Lars Möller and Till Warwas celebrating the beauty of the river and one of the best views of the Elbe from the museum and adjacent park! (03.04.23-12.02.24)
    • All Systems Fail: Sarah Morris’ art is strongly influenced by modern society. The Deichtorhallen is showing a collection of her works from the last 30 years, which include elements of architecture, globalisation and digitalisation. (03.05.23-20.08.23)

The Alte Wall – a historic ensemble opposite the city hall – is also definitely worth a visit! Culinary delights, shopping and culture in a historic ambience: The Alte Wall is known for its upscale shopping experience and is home to some renowned designer brands, an art museum, offices and restaurants. The architecture is also remarkable. The street is lined with beautiful, historic buildings that give it a special charm. The Alte Wall is also in close proximity to other well-known sights and shopping opportunities in Hamburg. The Rathausmarkt, Mönckebergstraße and the Binnenalster are just a few steps away.
